Munich, Germany | June 15, 2023 - Today, LONGi Green Energy Technology Co., Ltd. announced its most recent achievement of a new 33.5% efficiency for its perovskite/crystalline silicon tandem solar cells based on commercial CZ silicon wafers at the world's leading trade fair for the solar industry, the Intersolar 2023.
According to the European Solar Test Installation (ESTI), LONGi has achieved conversion efficiency of 33.5% for silicon-perovskite tandem solar cells, an increase of 1.7% from the previous 31.8% published on the 16th International Photovoltaic Power Generation and Smart Energy Conference & Exhibition (SNEC) in Shanghai. Currently this is the 2nd highest efficiency record in the world and there is a possibility of continuous improvement in the future.
Research on tandem cells has led to successive breakthroughs in key technologies
LONGi’s R&D team is one of the earliest in China to carry out research on tandem solar cells. In the face of mass production development, the LONGi R&D team has achieved successive breakthroughs in key technologies. These include perovskite thin-film crystal growth on textured silicon substrates, effective bulk passivation and light management, and these advancements have led to rapid improvements in the efficiency of silicon-based tandem cells.
“Improving cell conversion efficiency and reducing the cost of electricity remain the perpetual theme driving the development of the photovoltaic industry,” said Li Zhenguo, President of LONGi during a speech at Intersolar. From April 2021, LONGi has broken the world record for solar cell efficiency 14 times, and currently holds the title of achieving the highest conversion efficiency for silicon solar cells at 26.81%. Since listing in 2012, LONGi has invested over 20 billion yuan (2.5 billion Euros) in R&D and has obtained 2,132 patents of various types.
“The photovoltaic power generation is "born from light" and the light from the sun is just fair to everyone. As a global inclusive energy source, photovoltaic is sending light and well-being to various countries and regions around the world. Over the past decade, because the cost of electricity has dropped by more than 90%, photovoltaic has become the most economical energy type in most countries in the world,” Li Zhenguo emphasized.
Conceptual product “2681” based on 26.81 % efficiency displayed at Intersolar
LONGi brought its world-record-holding conceptual product 2681 to the audiences. This conceptual product named 2681 weighs 31.8 kg and has a size of 2278 mm × 1134 mm. Its ultra-high efficiency is based on the advanced technology of 26.81% crystalline silicon solar cell efficiency achieved last year in November 2022, and its ultra-high performance comes from high cell development. It also has other features like voltage and symmetrical cell structure, and power generation of over 600 W.
6 month-timeframe from laboratory data to conceptual product
The LONGi R&D team, which comprises more than 4,000 employees, managed to transform laboratory data into a conceptual product within a mere six-month timeframe. In the future, LONGi seeks to participate in the development of the global PV industry through investment, technical cooperation and other forms, so that more countries can see that Chinese enterprises in the high-end manufacturing industry also have the ability and willingness to carry out global cooperation.
LONGi presents heterojunction module “New Tech Conceptual Product”
The concept product adopted LONGi's self-developed silicon heterojunction cells also displayed at the Intersolar. The product is designed for the distributed scenario, this 54 cells module named “New Tech Conceptual Product” has a size of 1722 mm × 1134mm, a 90% bifacial rate for increased power generation, and a temperature coefficient of ~-0.25%/°C which sets them to great performance in high temperature environment. It has a very low power degradation, the PID (Potential-Induced Degradation) is almost at zero. Due to its dual-glass structure, the New Tech Conceptual Product has excellent product life cycle reliability. The development of the conceptual product brings it one step closer to achieving mass production.
About LONGi and LONGi Solar
LONGi Solar is one of the world’s largest solar technology companies, ranking first in global module shipments since 2020. It is a subsidiary of LONGi Green Energy Technology (LONGi), which was founded in 2000. LONGi has more than 60,000 employees, 30+ locations and 30 manufacturing sites globally. LONGi Europe is headquartered in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The company has established five business sectors, covering mono silicon, wafers, cells and modules, commercial and industrial distributed solar solutions, green energy solutions and hydrogen equipment to support the development of zero-carbon energy globally. Since 2021, LONGi has broken the photovoltaic (PV) cell conversion efficiency record 14 times in a row. In 2022, LONGi set a new world record of 26.81% for the efficiency of a p-type HJT silicon solar cell. The results were confirmed by the German Institut für Solarenergieforschung (Institute for Solar Energy Research or ISFH) in Hamelin, Germany. LONGi is the first Chinese solar manufacturer to join the three distinguished climate initiatives RE100, EP100 and EV100. Under the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), LONGi has set a 2030 emission reduction target aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60 percent across its operations and productions compared to 2020 levels.
