BELÉM, Brazil, November 14 – On November 14, during the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), LONGi officially launched the 2025 "Green Energy Empowering Vulnerable Communities in Brazil" project in collaboration with the UNHCR, UN Refugee Agency. As a global leader in solar technology, LONGi is committed to leveraging high-efficiency back-contact (BC) technology to improve the living conditions and quality of life for refugees and vulnerable populations, promoting global energy equity and sustainable development. The launch ceremony was attended by Andrew Harper, Special Advisor on Climate Action to the UNHCR, UN Refugee Agency; Davide Torzilli, UNHCR’s Representative in Brazil, Li Zhenguo, Founder and Chief Technology Officer of LONGi; and Jonathan Colombo, Senior Manager for Sustainability and Market Development in Latin America, among other distinguished guests.
The "Green Energy Empowering Vulnerable Communities in Brazil" initiative is jointly launched by LONGi and the UNHCR, UN Refugee Agency. It aims to provide clean energy and climate adaptation support for marginalized vulnerable groups in Brazil, including refugees, indigenous communities, and climate-affected household communities in states such as Pará and Roraima. Li Zhenguo stated that applying LONGi's advanced high-efficiency BC technology in regions most in need of light is the best interpretation of using technology to promote energy equity. This initiative goes beyond local infrastructure development, representing LONGi's strong commitment to "energy equity." Through this collaboration, LONGi will donate leading high-efficiency BC solar equipment to refugees and hosting communities, bringing stable and reliable clean energy to schools, medical stations, and community centers.
Jonathan Colombo shared the project implementation plan on site. He mentioned that Brazil currently hosts over 887,000 refugees and asylum-seekers, and over 12,000 indigenous people, most of whom are located in environmentally vulnerable areas of the Amazon region. The high-efficiency BC photovoltaic systems donated by LONGi will cover multiple schools, community hospitals, and other facilities, tangibly improving the living conditions of for forcibly displaced people. Additionally, LONGi will enhance the self-development capabilities of vulnerable groups through photovoltaic skills training and sustainable livelihood projects.
The Federal University of Pará (UFPA), one of Brazil's largest public universities, is also the host of the People’s Summit during the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30). LONGi has deployed approximately 44 kW of high-efficiency BC power generation systems in the university’s H block (Internationalization Center). This project has not only effectively driven UFPA’s promotion of sustainable clean energy in student education and public spaces but also increased academic attention to climate action. Furthermore, the Belém Sustainability Center, co-funded by LONGi, has played a key role in promoting the social and economic inclusion of refugees and other vulnerable groups. Building on UNHCR’s successful model in Roraima, the Center was established through a partnership with the International Education Institute of Brazil (IEB), the Warao Ojdiuna Council, and the Pope John XXIII Foundation (Funpapa). It serves as a hub for activities led by various public initiatives, focusing on training Warao community agents in areas such as environmental preservation, climate change, and sustainable community development. These efforts strengthen food security, enhance professional skills, and foster environmental stewardship, benefiting both refugee and host communities while preserving traditional knowledge and reinforcing social protection networks.
